Would you like to attract more customers through the Web? Millions of people log on to the Internet everyday to satisfy their needs for services and products. Search engine optimization means getting your Web site rank to higher in search engine results.

SEO firms have many techniques for making your site more relevant to search engines and more visible to customers. Writing effective meta tags helps your site become more search engine friendly. Part of optimization involves creating these tags for your Web pages.

Meta Tags
They give browsers a description of the page, allowing search engines to match your page up to people who are searching for that kind of information. SEO firms suggest providing your companys name, information about your company, information regarding the specific content of the page, and specific keywords in your meta tags. There are three main kinds of meta tags--meta keywords, meta titles, and meta descriptions

Meta Keywords
The keyword meta tag should contain targeted search phrases, each being separated by a comma in an unbroken string. Selecting keywords to include in meta tags requires research. SEO firms attempt to balance the popularity of a keyword with its competition. For example, andquot;degreeandquot; would be a suitable keyword for a college, but the competition on that particular word is probably high. The school may be better off being more specific in constructing their keywords such as using andquot;teaching degree program.andquot;

Meta keyword example: teaching jobs, teacher training, online degree

Meta Titles

Search engine optimization is about being noticed by browsers and search engines, and a cleverly written meta title can help do just that. Meta titles are the clickable links found on search results pages. A good one should inform the visitor of what content is on the page and verify that the information the searcher wants is there. It also needs to be interesting enough to get the searcher to click through. Meta titles should ideally be no longer than 94 characters, with the most relevant keywords placed at the beginning.

Meta title example (keywords are italicized): Teacher Training for Teaching Jobs: What You Need to Know

Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions are longer than meta titles but should be no more than 165 characters including spaces (only 165 characters are viewable on search results pages). SEO firms say descriptions provide pertinent information that wont fit into the title. Descriptions should summarize the Web page content and contain keywords and related terms, giving the searcher as much information as possible in one short paragraph. The description should also send a compelling message to engage readers and encourage them to go to the site.

Meta description example: Great teaching jobs require teacher training. Online degree programs help launch teaching careers. Train at home for terrific new jobs.

It is important to devote time to constructing your meta tags. Research popular keywords and analyze those of your competition. It is also advisable to seek the assistance of search engine optimization services. They have the experience to help you make your site more visible and attractive to potential customers.
