Are you interested in retaining your employees? Do you want them to be satisfied with you and their jobs? The longer your employees stay with you, the stronger your business will become. Sure, you have to pay your employees well and you have to provide them with quality benefits; but, your return on investing in them should mean more revenue for your company.

An employee-boss relationship is one of reciprocation. There are different roles to be played by each, but through mutual respect and devotion, the relationship should be advantageous for both parties.

The following article is written to help executives and managers retain good employees.

Working environment
Many people concern themselves with their work environment. The average worker spends a large amount of their waking like at work; their environment should matter.

The particular industry will play a part on the environment. An office setting will place emphasis on décor and relationships with coworkers. A warehouse setting may place more emphasis on safety precautions and break room facilities.

No matter the setting, positivity seems to be something employees desire. Unfortunately, money is needed in life and earned through work; most of us have to be there, so we appreciate having it be as pleasant as possible.

Recognition
Employees want to feel valued. They want to be recognized as individuals. Maybe others can come in and do their job, but employees want to know their companies value their presence at their job.

‘Perks’ are always a great incentive to employees, but not necessary. Employees want to be treated fairly and recognized for their accomplishments. This may mean a manager providing a compliment in regards to project well done or a mention of a worker ‘stepping-up’ their contribution as of late. Notice workers as individuals.

All hands in
Any employee from top executives to mailroom clerks can contribute to the business. Ideas can come from anyone at anytime. This is why it is important to invite all employees to contribute their views and ideas.

It is good practice to have open meetings on all levels. This serves as a platform providing all employees a chance to voice opinions. Managers can relay employee ideas to upper management.

Continuous learning
Employees enjoy learning. They understand the more they know, the better they will perform their job increasing their sense of value to the company. It is important to send employees to workshops or other venues for education.

Make management responsible
Sometimes the managers and not the employees are responsible for poor retention. When you are receiving poor retention rates from a department, look at the manager’s performance. Make all people accountable.
