The advent of the Web has introduced many opportunities for the savvy businessperson. Lately, many cyber travelers have ventured down the avenue of affiliate marketing. The process brings with it a win-win situation for both parties. One hosts another’s products or services, and when a customer purchases from the latter, the former gets a percentage of the revenue. It all seems simple enough (and lucrative as well).

So, how does one choose the right partnership? Is there a method to this business matter, or will any affiliate connection be suffice?

The following article offers suggestions on choosing your affiliate marketing partnership.

How much will you make?
Obviously, you are in the program to make money, so you will want to know how much. If you are hosting the products of others, you want to make sure you are getting a substantial amount of money for each sale. Otherwise, you may spend a lot of money marketing their product without seeing a return on the investment.

How popular is their site?
You want your partner to be popular, but not too acclaimed. If people already know to go directly to their site, being their affiliate does not place you in an advantageous position. Also, ask them how many other affiliates they have; you do not want to have to compete with many other affiliates. Look for a good balance. You want to work for a site with credibility, yet not yet reached their pinnacle.

How frequent are payments?
You are going to contribute some marketing dollars in order to promote their products and services. In order to balance your own budget properly you will need to know how often you will receive payments. It could be every week, each month, every quarter of a year, etc. Your approach to marketing may be contingent on the program’s income.

Do they track browser behavior?
A browser may click on an affiliate’s site from yours but not immediately make a purchase, yet make one later. Shouldn’t you receive the credit for their action? Most people will respond in the affirmative. This means your affiliate partner needs to track browser behavior in order for you to be granted credit for the sale.

Will you get paid for repeat customers?
Closely related to the above section is the subject of repeat customers. If a customer found your affiliate through you, they will not return to your site to get back to your affiliate. Yet, some would argue you should still receive credit due to the initial introduction. What is your affiliate partner’s take on this subject? Make sure you receive part of the revenue for subsequent sales.

Will they help you with the marketing?
Some sites will host white papers, articles, podcasts, video, etc. in order to attract buyers. Does your affiliate partner plan to help you market their products? How do they plan to attract browsers? Choose a partner that has an array of marketing tactics; this will help you both make more money.
