Choosing the name for your site is like selecting one for your child. Once, the name is provided, it is there for life. The process of getting a domain name is simple enough…besides deciding on a name. The following article offers some suggestions before making the big decision.

For love or money?
Some businesses may be partial to a particular name and others may choose a name they think would be most prevalent in the minds of consumers. Either way, you will have to devote time in building your brand name. If you already have a well-established business, then choosing that name for your site will make the most sense. If your business is still waiting to become world renowned, then you can choose a new name for the site.

You want to choose a name that people remember, but you also want to be found by browsers. It is somewhat of a paradox: If you are found, people will remember you; and if they keep your name in memory, they will find you on the Web. What is more effective?

Keywords are key
Most professionals will tell you to choose a domain name that is pertinent to your products/services. For instance, “CoolGuys.com” would be a catchy name for an air condition service, but they may not be on the top of the results page if someone is searching for “air condition services.” Incorporating your products/services into your domain name, will aid your ability to climb to the top of the search results for your keywords.

Wit is legitimate
Looking at the other side of the coin, it does not mean you will not be successful in choosing a catchy domain name. A witty name can help with marketing. A clever name may not directly help with engine rankings, but will indirectly in attracting popularity. For instance, the “CoolGuys” could orchestrate commercials and Web content that lives up to their name, while remaining pertinent to their services: like coming up with the “top ten ways to keep cool in the summer” or “how to be cool.” This approach takes more creativity, but may become more profitable.

Conclusion
Many professionals will tell you to go with keywords or cleverness, and not your pre-established company name (unless you are McDonalds, Microsoft, etc.). To do so would waste the potential of attracting browsers’ attention. Obviously, as long as the name is not taken, you can choose whatever name you please, but hopefully you have a better understanding of the approaches in deciding what will be best for your business.
