Working from home is a luxury that not many of us can afford. Whether you are your own boss or working for several businesses from your own domain, there are a few things to keep in mind to effectively get things done. The following is a to-do-list for those who mix their offices and abodes.

A Separate Peace
Though you are essentially 'working from home,' you want to create some sense of differentiation. Having a room dedicated to your work (a pseudo office) is suggested, but if you are pressed for space, create your own cubicle with dividers or screens.

It is also suggested to get a separate telephone line for your business. It will be much more professional to relate to others in the business world this way and you will not have to be bothered with business once you decide to end the work day.

Time is of the Essence
Before the end of everyday, set goals to accomplish the following day. Goals can be modified if something extremely important comes up, but at least you will have a good idea of what to do each day. It is much easier to not use time effectively at home because you do not have any superiors breathing down your neck and there are more personalized distractions at home.

Keep moving throughout the day. Invest in multipurpose office equipment to save time from going out to send faxes or make copies. A multipurpose machine can serve as a fax, copier, printer, answering machine, phone, scanner, etc. Employ easy-to-use software for business management and accounting, but keep paper receipts, invoices, and checks filed away.

Make sure your work area is well organized, so time does not have to be spent locating anything. Use filing cabinets, color-coated folders, and disks to ameliorate organization. Obtain furniture for your home office that is suited for a home office. Manufacturers often have lines that are designed specifically for working at home that is more space efficient, so you will not feel as cluttered as working with full-sized office furniture.

You do not have to do everything yourself. Use the benefit of business-to-business outsourcing for whatever business needs you are not prepared to do yourself.

Attitude is Everything
Dress in a manner that will be most conducive to a productive work day. If you do not have to meet with anyone of the professional nature, it doesn't matter if you are working in a sweatshirt and jeans.

Just because you have the benefit of working from home, it doesn't mean that you have to always spend every hour of the business day there. Do not rule out going out to lunch to make connections or visiting sites of others in your same industry.
