The nature of business is very competitive. Competition comes from outside and inside your own business. Naturally, people want to be successful and get more out of their time invested in the workplace. Many people feel that they deserve a promotion, but they do not know the right way to go about getting one. It may be wise to consult a business coach, but there are steps you need to take yourself.

Where to Start
Don't wait to be recognized. For one, that may never happen, and if you do not verbalize your interest, most businesses will be satisfied to have you doing stellar work for less pay. You need to make it known that you are looking to advance. A good idea would be to begin to 'step-it-up' a bit before you make your intentions clear, and then don't ease up on your work ethic; actions speak louder than words.

"Find a need and fill it!"
A good way to start would be to look for a project or an extension of one that your skills are most conducive in contributing towards. Let your boss or supervisor know that you intend to devote energy towards the project, so that your work will be noticed and attributed to you. Provide a detailed description of the steps you will take to work on the project and what your ultimate results will be.

Be Proactive
Being proactive creates a great situation for your future at the business. You may not immediately taste the fruits of your labor, but letting it be known that you are looking to advance in conjunction with acting accordingly will eventually pay off. Even in the worst possible situation of working harder for a long time without getting a promotion, puts you in the position of looking elsewhere with a great recommendation behind you.

"Success can only be measured in terms of distance traveled."

Volunteering to work on side projects is also a good way to get noticed. You may not immediately get paid more for doing this, but you are showing that you are a team player and want to do what's best for the business. You still create a platform to show your superiors the kind of job you can do and a great job will never go unnoticed by superiors.

Make a List
It would be wise to keep a running list of things that you are doing to help the business. Note performances that go above and beyond call of duty and performances that increase the bottom line of the company. You can even make a spreadsheet to leave on your computer to fill in while you're completing tasks.

"The man who makes an appearance, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead."

You may take a lot of things you do for your company for granted. Noting every task completed and tracking the results of this task for your company will create a better view of your value to the business. Knowing your value will make it easier for you to speak confidently and informatively about yourself come time of promotion.

Get That Promotion
Most jobs will have intermittent performance evaluations. These meetings are also a great time to raise awareness that you would like a promotion and to showcase what you have done for the company. Being verbally proactive and committing the actions to 'back up' your assertions will increase your chances of getting the promotion that you deserve.
