How many of you have a Web site? Hopefully, I would get an overwhelming response… So, part of having a Web site is hosting good content. Content not only intrigues browsers, but promotes the ranking of your site on search engines. Many people feel nervous about writing to the masses. This is only a concern if you are not posting any content at all. It does not have to be composed by you, you can outsource for your copywriting.
Whether you are outsourcing or conducting the writing yourself, establishing content on your site is a must. The following article outlines some aspects of orchestrating good content.
What is good Web content? “Good” may be a subjective word, but we will attempt to be as objective as possible. Your content should focus on the following:
- Resourceful information - Reader access - Good grammar and spelling
Resourceful information Your content will closely and loosely relate to your products or services, but it has to be more than advertisement. If you are going to be successful, your products and services should do most of the talking for themselves. Your content needs to be unique and offer something to the reader. Whether your content answers industry questions, provides tips and advice, or discusses on-going trends, it has to be useful for the reader.
Reader access Writing for the Web is different from writing a book or research paper. Web browsers are very fickle; the abundance of information available on the Web makes it difficult to capture the attention of browsers. Web writers must use a good amount of spacing in their writing. Reading off a screen is different from reading out of a book. Web browsers become disinterested when met with a block of writing. A Web writer must use spacing along with headings and sub headings to make the Web page more discernable.
Good grammar and spelling Most readers will not be as meticulous as your high school English teachers, but your writing must be readable. It is always good practice to read, reread, and reread, your writing before posting. Have someone else read and edit your writing too; they may notice something you do not. Most writing applications have an editing function, so most obvious mistakes will be identified that way.
