What is a supply chain?
Supply chain services refer to every process involved in producing and delivering a final product or service. Managing a supply chain includes handling supply and demand, sourcing raw materials and parts, manufacturing and assembly, warehousing and inventory tracking, order entry and order management, distribution, and delivery.
Why is the supply chain important?
In years of the past, when competition was not an issue, manufacturers were able to determine the logistics of the process. In recent years, with the influx of new businesses (especially due to the Internet), customers have been able to make the calls influencing the way in which the supply chain is operated. Manufacturers need to fill the demand for options, styles, features, order fulfillment, and fast delivery.
What impediments are companies met with in developing efficient supply chains?
The industry is marred by the inability to impeccably determine performance levels. Manufacturers and service providers are unable to use a common assessment tool to improve performance. Recently, software systems that can individually address problem areas are sought after by providers.
