Procrastination – it becomes a habit which impedes our tasks. In telemarketing, it is not uncommon. What do we procrastinate about? Can anyone relate to making a million and one excuses to put-off making calls? Do you have to go the bathroom again, get a drink of water, review some papers, etc.? Telemarketing success is contingent on making calls; so, we have to overcome our reluctance and get on the phone.
We are getting paid to do our job, so why are we not doing it? It is not a problem to feel some hesitation in making calls, but it is a problem to do nothing about it.
Understand your feelings
So, you are not immediately confident to make telemarketing calls. It could be for a number of reasons: the last caller was very rude, you think cold-calling is a nuisance to most people, you cannot always answer the customer’s immediate questions, etc. Understand your ‘slump’ or feelings of hesitation are only temporary and can be alleviated as soon as you do something about it.
Reexamine your methods
Think about how you have been executing your calls lately. Have you been engaging in a routine which can be modified for the better? Examine your sales habits. Think of times you have been most successful in telemarketing. Is there a difference between now and then? You can never learn enough. Consider participating in telemarketing workshops, reviewing literature, and talking with cohorts to augment your skills.
Stay positive
You can easily affect the caller’s perception of you. You may have heard it is good to smile into the telephone; this is true. Some telemarketers expect failure before they make the call. Their thoughts become a self-fulfilling prophecy. It is important to stay positive about yourself and your product/service. It is true- not everyone will be interested in what you have to say, but this should not affect your tone and confidence. Regularly affirm your positivity throughout the day.
Remember why you are there
Most people, if not needed, would elect not to work. Unfortunately, this utopian vision does not presently exist. Why are you there? Do you have a house you need to pay for? Do you need to provide for your spouse and children? Remembering our needs will help keep focus.
Also, remember why you have chosen your particular place of work and profession. Does your company grant good benefits? Do you enjoy working with your coworkers? Do you have a natural talent for telemarketing?
Set goals and rewards
Give yourself some incentive for working hard. Set a goal for yourself regarding the day, the week, the month, etc. When you reach or surpass your telemarketing goal, give yourself a reward. Positive reinforcement can help get past your temporary telemarketing reluctance.
