All companies want to make an impact on their market. Ideally, we try to do this with extraordinary products and services. Yet, let’s face it, in many industries there is not a huge difference in products and services. So, how do you make a name for yourself?

Big companies become bigger because they have the money to do so. They can devote large denominations of money to huge marketing campaigns. Money makes money. How do smaller companies compete?

Popularity does not have to come at a monetary cost. Knowing ways to leverage the phenomenon of word-of-mouth marketing greatly helps smaller businesses compete with bigger companies.

Consider the following:

The media
The media is there at your disposal. The trick is captivating their attention, so they will in turn call attention to you. Identify print publications, television stations, radio programs, Web sites, blogs, etc. that cater to your target market. You want these outlets to speak on your behalf. This happens by researching each outlet and knowing how to deliver value to their fans.

Blog
Do you have knowledge to deliver to the masses? If so, then show what you know through blog posts. Blogs can quickly build a community of followers who in turn will tell others of your valuable resource. Provide browsers something of use and watch your popularity increase.

Write articles
Host articles on your site and post them on other sites as well. Consumers enjoy the ability to make educated decisions. Facilitate their savvy nature by writing upon pertinent industry information. This can include ‘how to’ articles, buyers guides, etc.

Host workshops
Sometimes, your best word-of-mouth marketers are in your own industry. Hosting workshops that will augment the skills of workers in your industry will place your company in high regard. Workshops show you respect your industry enough to share knowledge in order to see your industry prosper.

Provide case studies
People can learn from the mistakes and triumphs of others. Spending time organizing a case study will help those interested understand trends in the industry. Many companies fail to understand they do not sell their products and services, but sell solutions. Make your audience better understand the industry through case studies, and they will see the benefit of your products and services.
