There are different names for it. Writers block, dry spells, at a loss, etc. Sometimes, we cannot generate new ideas. In business, getting new ideas will never get old. Owners depend on innovative, fresh material to enable their business to surpass the competition.

Unfortunately, ideas find you and not the other way around, but we can be inspired. So, where can we find the inspiration for our ideas? The easiest answer is everywhere.

You cannot copyright an idea
I had a professor once that said all ideas have already been originated and that all future thoughts were to be recycled. Without pledging myself to the absolute verity of the statement, it does spawn an interesting concept. You can get ideas from other sources.

Ideas cannot be copyrighted only the exact words used to express it. Examine what others are doing, look at their methods from all angles, and attempt to improve upon or add another dimension to what is already there. Take the raw elements from outside sources, augment their material, and produce something of your own.

Bring it back
People, and especially the world of business in general, like to promote the concepts of new and improved. Ideas and methods are originated, run their course, and then are disbanded for the next big trend. History has a tendency to repeat itself.

Revisit old ideas and trends in the same manner you would observe ideas as suggested above. Is there an angle that presents itself in a new way now as opposed to then? Is there an opportunity to improve the concept in regards to contemporary standards?

Give birth to new ideas
Think of a child. It is the combination of its parents’ genetics. It may have its father’s hair, its mother’s face, etc. Business ideas can be similar to a newborn. Take ideas from multiple sources, combine them, alter them, and make them your own. Not only can you get ideas from one source, but you can build upon ideas and find inspiration from multiple sources.
